The Aromas of Barbera d'Asti: style and identity in the four interpretations of Poderi Tesio.
A journey into the heart of Barbera d'Asti, discovering how winemaking stylistic choices express the unique character of our labels.
Barbera d'Asti: a deep and versatile identity
Barbera d'Asti is one of the great red wines of Piedmont: generous, vibrant, capable of revealing every nuance of the land that nurtures it. Born in the rolling hills of Monferrato, it has become a benchmark for those seeking authenticity and depth in the glass. In Nizza Monferrato, the heart of the denomination, Barbera finds an especially intense and structured expression: limestone soils, hillside exposures, and a favourable microclimate make this town the ideal home for the fullest expression of the variety.
Within this context, Poderi Tesio offers four unique interpretations of the Barbera grape, each, a genuine reflection of the territory and the family's passion. The common thread is the elegant and pure character of the wines, an authentic signature of the winery’s philosophy. Let’s explore the distinctive features of these labels.
Barbera d'Asti DOCG – The everyday essence
Our Barbera d'Asti DOCG comes from historic vineyards planted between 1940 and 1946 in the town of Mombaruzzo. Vinified in stainless steel and aged for at least six months in the bottle, it offers a fresh and fruity sip, perfect for those seeking a young and easy-to-drink wine.
Agile on the palate, with natural acidity that pairs beautifully with cured meats, appetizers, and light first courses. Ideal with classic Piedmontese dishes like agnolotti with roast sauce or vitello tonnato.
Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG – The expressive maturity
The Barbera d'Asti Superiore DOCG from Poderi Tesio stands out for its intensity and structure, thanks to a skilful use of wood. Aged in oak tonneau, it showcases a complex bouquet with notes of ripe fruit and spices. On the palate, it is full-bodied and persistent, with soft yet intense tannins—ideal for pairing with rich dishes like braised meats and roasts.
Nizza DOCG – Barbera as a cru
The Nizza DOCG, established in 2014 as an autonomous denomination, represents the highest expression of Barbera. Produced in only 18 municipalities, with 100% Barbera grapes from selected vineyards, low yields (max 7 metric tons per hectare), and meticulous vinification.
It follows strict guidelines:
- Minimum aging of 18 months, with at least six in wood
- Riserva version: 30 months, with at least 12 in wood
- Mandatory bottling in the production area
- Vintage indicated on the label
Poderi Tesio’s version comes from old, well-exposed vineyards, distinguished by power, elegance, and aging potential. Produced exclusively in the finest years from vines planted between 1942 and 1948, aged for 12 months in oak tonneau and 12 months in the bottle. It offers a complex sensory profile with aromas of cherry preserves, dried flowers, and spices. The palate is enveloping and intense—a versatile companion for convivial moments and refined dining tables. It shines with the grandest dishes of Piedmontese tradition, like braised meats, roasts, and game.
Nizza DOCG Riserva – Excellence at the Heart of the Denomination
The Nizza DOCG Riserva is the crown jewel of Poderi Tesio. Produced only in outstanding vintages, this Riserva captivates with its sensory richness. Aged for 12 months in oak tonneau and 24 months in the bottle, it presents a rich bouquet with notes of cherry preserves, pepper, leather, and chocolate. Warm, intense, and full-bodied on the palate, with extraordinary persistence. An impeccable glass for pairing with hearty dishes and aged cheeses.
A Remarkable Quartet: A Story of Terroir
Poderi Tesio’s labels interact harmoniously, offering a coherent sensory journey, starting with the everyday vibrancy of Barbera d'Asti, moving toward the structure of Barbera d'Asti Superiore, and culminating in the elegance of Nizza DOCG and Nizza Riserva.
Each bottle reveals a different facet of the grape, shaped by conscious stylistic choices that remain faithful to the land.
